As a librarian, my favorite exclamations to hear from students are, “Wow, that’s cool!” or “That was simple!” I remember how daunting the research process was as an undergraduate – that never-ending page of database links, the looming stacks with their nonsense labeling, bibliographic entry after bibliographic entry in the catalog. You have to write something, than cite something, and hope that your GPA remains relatively unscathed.
My job is to make students’ jobs easier. We can go into outrageous detail about search strategy and the scholarly journal publishing cycle if they wish, but ultimately I’m here to connect them to the information they need in the easiest, most time-efficient manner possible. I want students to leave with the confidence to try library research again, unassisted if they wish, or with a friendly librarian at their side should they choose. I want to hear, "Cool! That was easy."
